HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden announced the birth of a three-banded armadillo.
Officials say the new pup was born August 1 and marks the second three-banded armadillo birth in the zoo’s history. Officials note this is a huge milestone moment for the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which works to ensure the long-term sustainability of this species in AZA-accredited facilities.

A spokesperson for the zoo says mom Pallina and her tiny “pup” are currently off-exhibit, spending these first few weeks bonding behind the scenes.

The spokesperson says, “While this birth is a cause for celebration, we are still in the fragile, early stages of development. So we’re not ‘out of the woods’ yet. Our animal care and veterinary teams continue to monitor the pair via remote camera and hands on examinations as indicated to ensure positive growth of the pup and the health of Pallina.”
Officials say three-banded armadillos are classified as near-threatened, with their populations declining rapidly. They are native to eastern Bolivia, southwestern Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. This species is unique in its ability to roll into a ball for protection.
