HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — As students in Horry County prepare to return to the classroom next week, they will be greeted by a new primary initiative aimed at boosting literacy rates.
The program, known as “Rise with Reading,” is the brainchild of the district’s new superintendent, Clifford Jones.
Jones emphasized that literacy rates are the top priority for Horry County Schools (HCS).
He made a bold promise, stating, “The board has been very clear about their North Star, and it’s around literacy. And what we’ve decided to do is have a reading guarantee here in Horry County Schools, where we’re trying to get to 95% of our reading at or above grade level by 2030. Right now we’re around 74-75%. We have a lot of work to do, but our teachers have been in training, we have a curriculum, and we have support. It’s an all-in initiative.”…
