Rhode Island Stands By Libraries as Censorship Spreads in Some Communities

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Lawmakers in Rhode Island are standing by local libraries, with Gov. Dan McKee signing a measure into law Tuesday that both prohibits censorship and promotes access to information.

““Public libraries are places where you can find yourself in other people’s words,” McKee said during a bill signing ceremony at the Rochambeau Library in Providence.

“The differing experiences and world views captured in books are as varied and interesting as every individual who is browsing the shelves,” he continued, adding, “In Rhode Island, we promote free expression. We don’t restrict it.”…
