Construction of housing complex near Berryessa BART station could begin soon

San Jose has greenlit development permits for a major project near the Berryessa BART Station, paving the way for construction to begin on hundreds of new affordable housing units within the next several weeks.

While market conditions prompted changes to the Facchino Family’s vision for the 13-acre site, including scrapping an office and commercial component on Berryessa Road, developers are pushing forward with an aggressive construction timeline for the six-story, 260-unit housing complex on a small portion of the property to fulfill funding requirements that they believe will help facilitate development on the remaining parts.

“There are still some pockets of property that are crucial that we get developed and this Facchino property, which is right across the street from our station … it’s an important piece that we zoned last year with some conditions that have to be changed,” said District 4 City Councilmember David Cohen, who represents the area. “One of those conditions is a reconfiguration of the affordable housing piece, where I’m excited to say that the developer Swenson is ready to break ground on the couple hundred units of affordable housing at one part of the property.”…
