Virginia Beach sheriff’s deputies hit the waves to unwind

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Working 12-hour shifts in the city jail can be stressful, so to blow off some steam and grow comradery among staff, the Sheriff’s Office has started a surf team.

No experience is required and it’s more like a club than a team, said Chief Deputy Alvie “Cool” Culanding.

“The sheriff is really making a big push for wellness in terms of the work stress we have, the workload,” he said. “What better than a resource in our backyard.”…
