Local groups hold back-to-school event for North East students

Students in North East are getting ready for this upcoming school year with an extra boost.

The North East Council of Churches and the North East PA Lions Club held a back-to-school distribution event on Wednesday.

Both organizations worked as a team to help meet the needs of students of the North East School District.

Members of the council provided free new backpacks filled with outfits, and the Lions Club provided school supplies and hygiene items.

“In today’s economy, supplies are getting more expensive, and people cannot always afford them for their students. And, a lot of the supplies that we give them are supposedly for use at home,” said Dick Kelley, a member of the Lions Club. “This year we had two drive-thrus at the Dollar General on West Main, where people could bring school supplies or hygiene products and drop them off.”…
