Local school districts try to finish staffing ahead of first day of class

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) The first day of school is certainly one of the highlights of the year, especially for staff. However, one of the critical behind-the-scenes processes is hiring new people, and that can be time-consuming.

As of August 1st, Roanoke City still needs to fill 19 positions for its schools. It is also in a unique predicament with its school nurses. Carilion Clinic previously provided the city with nurses, but that deal is nearing its end.

School districts urge caution on the roadways as school buses roll out

“We’re still working on that because Carilion still has six months, because they extended it six months,” Dominick McKee, Roanoke City Public Schools’ chief human resources officer, said. “We have an applicant poll out there, and we actually have more applicants than we have positions, so we’re in pretty good shape.”
