St. Clair County man pleads guilty to faking students’ marine certification

A St. Clair County man pleaded guilty to defrauding the U.S. Coast Guard by falsifying records of students in his merchant mariners courses, officials said.

Mel Stackpoole, 62, entered the plea Aug. 11 in federal court in Detroit to a count of knowingly altering and falsifying records and documents with the intent to impede the proper administration of a matter within the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard, said U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Jerome Gorgon Jr…
