North Carolina Man Assaulted a LongHorn Steakhouse Employee for Not Letting His Dog Eat at the Table

The former owner of Edward Teach Brewing, 49-year-old Gary Sholar, has been arrested in connection with a violent assault that took place at a Wilmington Longhorn Steakhouse on July 23.

According to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD), Sholar was dining at the restaurant with his dog and feeding it at the table when an employee informed him that doing so violated health codes. Police say Sholar responded by yelling profanities and insults before throwing a porcelain plate at the employee’s head.

Serious Injuries Reported

The victim was transported by EMS to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, including a hairline skull fracture and a scalp wound that required seven stitches. Court records state the victim later sought additional medical attention at urgent care twice for pain and headaches, underwent CAT scans at a second hospital visit, and followed up with a neurologist.

Arrest and Charges

After investigating the incident, WPD arrested Sholar on August 7. He was charged with assault, inflicting serious injury, and given a $1,000 secured bond.

Just days before the incident, Sholar had transferred ownership of Edward Teach Brewing to a trust controlled by his sister, Amy Ottaway. Attorneys for the brewery stated the transfer occurred on July 14 and was for “business reasons unrelated” to the July 23 incident.

Community and Business Response

Edward Teach Brewing has been closed since mid-June for renovations with no reopening date announced. In response to the arrest, the owners of The Fork N Cork and Smoke on the Water pledged to sell Edward Teach Brewing products for $2 each, with all proceeds going to the injured restaurant employee…
