In the final four weeks of summer last year, 45 people lost their lives on Iowa roadways, and nearly 30% of those fatalities were linked to impaired driving, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
To combat this deadly trend, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across the state for a targeted enforcement push from August 15 through September 1. The initiative is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which focuses on keeping impaired drivers and motorcycle riders off the roads.
“Impaired driving can take many forms, and our law enforcement officers and Drug Recognition Experts (DRE) are trained to identify all kinds of impairment,” said DRE State Coordinator Todd Olmstead. “Whether it’s alcohol or drugs, law enforcement can and will identify and stop impaired drivers when they see them.”…
