Mesquite Police Seize 68 Pounds of Meth Worth $400K on I-15

A routine traffic stop on Interstate 15 northeast of Las Vegas turned into one of the region’s most significant drug seizures this week, when Mesquite police discovered about 68 pounds of methamphetamine with a street value of $400,000 during a Tuesday traffic stop.

The substantial bust highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking along I-15, a corridor that law enforcement officials have long identified as a major pipeline for narcotics flowing through Nevada and beyond. According to Las Vegas Review-Journal, “I-15 is definitely a corridor that is utilized very frequently by drug-trafficking organizations.” The interstate’s strategic position connecting California to Utah and other western states makes it an attractive route for smugglers moving large quantities of drugs.

Major Seizures Along Drug Corridor

This latest seizure adds to a troubling pattern of major drug discoveries along I-15 in recent years. The 68-pound seizure ranks among the more significant methamphetamine busts in the region, though it falls short of some record-breaking seizures. As reported by KLAS 8 News Now, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper found 74 pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop on Interstate 15 near the Flamingo Road exit in a previous case.

Even larger busts have occurred in the Las Vegas valley, with DEA agents seizing 280 pounds of meth, 10 pounds of cocaine, 12 pounds of heroin and 6 pounds of counterfeit fentanyl pills in one operation, according to 8 News Now. The scale of the problem has grown dramatically, with the amount of meth seized more than doubling from 47,000 pounds to 112,000 pounds between 2017 and 2019, officials with the Drug Enforcement Administration reported.

Regional Meth Crisis Intensifying

The methamphetamine crisis has been escalating across the Las Vegas area and Nevada, with recent seizures demonstrating the scope of the problem. North Las Vegas K9 Jimmy helped officers seize about 80 pounds of methamphetamine in one recent operation, while drug agents seized more than 50 pounds of meth during a bust south of the Las Vegas Strip in another case…
