AARP Hawaiʻi celebrates 90 years of Social Security benefits

HONOLULU (KHON2) — On Aug. 14, AARP Hawaiʻi celebrated 90 years of Social Security since it was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1935.

Nearly 300,000 residents receive Social Security benefits in Hawaiʻi, AARP reported.

“It has helped thousands of kupuna and others stay out of poverty and afford the basics, and it’s something worth celebrating — and protecting,” said Kealiʻi Lopez, state director of AARP Hawaiʻi.

AARP hosted a birthday celebration in the morning and will participate in a nationwide tribute later tonight.
