WATCH: Tracking Erin with Meteorologist Tony Petrarca

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Erin strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as it moves west across the Atlantic, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

It’s expected to reach Category 3 over the weekend, which would make it the first major storm in what’s otherwise been a quiet hurricane season so far.

While the current track calls for Erin to spin safely out to sea before hitting the east coast of the United States, Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca is keeping a close eye on the system.
