Little Rock campaign (Civil War), on August 15, 1863, during the Union advance on Little Rock, Major General Frederick Steele’s forces began arriving at Clarendon. As they advanced, nearly a thousand men fell ill within two days due to heat, dust, and contaminated water. Steele’s infantry set up a base at DeValls Bluff shortly thereafter.
