City to install HAWK signal on Carlisle after bicyclist killed in crash

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A 19-year-old city employee who worked to educate the public on bicycle safety was the latest bicyclist to lose her life on an Albuquerque street. On Thursday, the city announced safety upgrades along the road where she was killed, but they’re not stopping there.

Right now, the Hahn Arroyo crossing near Carlisle Blvd. has flashing yellow lights. The city now plans to add a signal forcing drivers to stop when there’s a bicyclist present.

The mother of the 19-year-old who was killed there said the improvements are great, but still more needs to be done. “I hope the changes are going to be around safety and driver education. As you can see, we have a robust biking community. We know what the rules are, we know what the regulations are, we know how to be safe. It’s just we’re not getting the same safety from drivers,” said Melinda Montoya, Kayla Vanlandingham’s mother…
