BELLVUE, Colo. — Five years after the Cameron Peak Fire in northern Colorado, firefighters, local officials and community members gathered Saturday at a fire station in the Poudre Canyon to commemorate a disaster that still casts a long shadow.
The fire, which began in August 2020, scorched more than 208,000 acres across national forest land and Rocky Mountain National Park, making it the largest wildfire in state history. It destroyed 184 homes and forced more than 6,000 people to evacuate. Larimer County officials have estimated the property losses at more than $6 million.
