Grieving therapy dog finds new purpose after loss of beloved owner

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Therapy dogs are known for comforting others through anxiety, grief, and trauma. But after losing his owner, one loyal dog, named Riggs, found himself in need of healing.

When therapy dogs lose a partner, they can experience grief much like humans—showing signs of sadness, loss of appetite, and behavioral changes. That was the case for Riggs, a black Labrador retriever who once brought joy to hospital rooms alongside his owner, Chuck Patrick.

“He’s sweet, gentle, and loving,” said Gloria Patrick, Chuck’s wife. “And he loves people.”…
