Mississippi man sentenced for robbing Mobile credit union

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A Mississippi man has been sentenced to federal prison for robbing a credit union in Mobile earlier this year.

A federal judge on Friday handed a 37-month term to 68-year-old Joseph D. Nelson of Moss Point, Miss., the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama announced.

On March 19, Nelson disguised himself and went into a Family Security Credit Union branch on Airport Boulevard in Mobile. He handed a teller a note that demanded money and stated that Nelson was armed with a gun and explosives, court documents revealed. Nelson left after the teller handed him an envelope containing $6,843, according to court records.

However, a witness followed Nelson on foot and then in his vehicle. The witness flagged down Mobile police officers, who took Nelson into custody. Investigators recovered the cash, the note and the disguise worn by Nelson, who confessed to the crime, the documents show…
