For nearly five decades, KVPR 89.3 and 89.1 has been a trusted source of news, culture, and music for the Central Valley. Serving Fresno, Tulare, Kings, Kern, Merced, Madera, and Mariposa counties, the station is a locally based nonprofit and proud member of the NPR network. While it airs many well-known national programs, KVPR is entirely independent, with its staff and volunteer board of directors rooted in the Valley.
“Our mission has always been to bring local listeners voices and sounds that inform and inspire,” said Joe Moore, KVPR’s general manager. “We’ve been serving listeners in the Valley since 1978, and we’re not going anywhere.”
Popular programs such as NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me, and Weekend Edition draw loyal listeners, while locally produced shows bring a uniquely Central Valley perspective to the airwaves. KVPR’s Central Valley Daily podcast—launched just 11 months ago—offers in-depth interviews, feature reports, and local headlines every weekday. Another beloved program, Young Artists Spotlight, showcases live performances from talented student musicians across the region, reflecting the station’s deep commitment to education and community connection.
That connection extends to innovative features like Central Valley Roots, a series of short vignettes highlighting local history, culture, and notable figures. With 90 episodes produced so far, it offers what Moore calls “a little slice of local culture” each weekday morning and evening.
Earlier this year, KVPR faced a new challenge: the loss of approximately $175,000 in federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting—about 7 percent of its annual budget.
