Farm Lease Termination Notice Deadline is Approaching

(KMAland) — Many states have a farm lease termination notice date that is fast approaching.

Iowa, for instance, has a provision in its farm lease laws that requires advance notification if a tenant or a landlord wants to terminate a lease, that lease termination notice must be delivered by September 1 of every year. Laws in other states may vary, but attorney Joe Peiffer at Ag and Business Legal Strategies in Hiawatha, Iowa, says the parties need to be thinking about what they want to do in 2026.

“Now, it’s been said by some farm financial people that farmers are looking to lose $250 per acre of soybeans this year and about break even on corn if you’re losing money or breaking even, the question becomes, do we need to lease that farm if I’m going to lose 250 bucks an acre at the current rent, why would I want to rent it next year at the same rent?”…
