NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A program within Metro Nashville Public Schools is helping support students experiencing homelessness.
Students who receive support from the Homeless Education Resource Office (HERO) Program are recognized as not having a “fixed, regular and adequate night-time residence.” They may be staying in a shelter, motel, campground, car, or sharing housing with friends or relatives. At the end of 2024, approximately 3,500 students fit this qualification.
The HERO Program provides the necessary resources, support and referrals to help these students be successful in the classroom and have a positive school experience. The initiative is run by a team of six working at the former Buena Vista Elementary School.
