Erin weakens during eyewall replacement cycle

West Palm Beach, FLA. (WPEC) — Hurricane Erin, currently a powerful Category 3 storm, is located about 200 miles north-northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and is moving west-northwest at 13 mph. With sustained winds of 125 mph and gusts up to 155 mph, Erin is producing dangerous sea conditions and heavy rainfall across the Greater Antilles.

Erin is currently going through an eyewall replacement cycle, which is why the strength has decreased slightly since yesterday.

The storm is expected to continue moving away from the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico through Sunday, then pass east of the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas tonight and tomorrow.

Large ocean swells and waves up to 38 feet are being generated near the storm’s center, creating hazardous surf and life-threatening rip currents. Rainbands from Erin are bringing heavy rain and strong thunderstorms to parts of the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, with risks of flash flooding, urban flooding, and landslides…
