Safer streets: Woodburn police, city leaders lay out plans to improve traffic safety

Traffic safety remains a priority for Woodburn, but city leaders say solutions will require time, money and careful planning.

At the Aug. 11 city council meeting, Woodburn Public Works Director Curtis Stultz and Woodburn Police Chief Jason Millican outlined the city’s current efforts to address speeding, red-light violations and dangerous driving on the roads.

To address traffic safety moving forward, the city is considering expanding traffic enforcement, targeting problematic intersections, continuing to gather data to hone solutions and exploring the idea of reducing neighborhood speed limits.

City data and slowing down streets

The city has been conducting speed studies using police radar and traffic counters. In the studies, the majority of drivers on most intersections and local roads drive at or below the speed limit. However, Stultz said a few problem spots show drivers pushing the limits…
