Local mom avoids amputation and walks again after groundbreaking ankle surgery

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — A young mother is crediting a team of surgeons at Christ Hospital with what she describes as a miracle after they saved her limb by creating a new ankle. Meg Bungenstock, a preschool teacher, faced the possibility of amputation when she could no longer walk, stand, or put pressure on her lower limb.

“I just started having pain, and it continued to increase as time went on,” Bungenstock said.

By the time she consulted Dr. Robert Kulwin, an orthopedic surgeon at Christ Hospital, it was clear that something was seriously wrong. Bungenstock had been told by other medical teams that her only option was amputation due to avascular necrosis, a condition that led her joint to collapse…
