Felonies expected to be dropped against Kalamazoo County commissioner

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Felony charges against a Kalamazoo County commissioner accused of slapping her child’s father are expected to be dismissed under the terms of a plea agreement.

On Friday, a St. Joseph County judge hearing a motion to dismiss two counts of resisting or obstructing a police officer against Tami Rayshawn Rey in exchange for her pleading guilty to a misdemeanor count of domestic violence.

Prosecutors said Rey should be placed on probation under a domestic violence deferral probation, though they needed to work out some additional details regarding parole in Kalamazoo County.

“Since there was no aggressive or violent behavior demonstrated towards the officers and this was a highly emotional situation, we saw no reason to proceed with felonies,” St. Joseph County Assistant Prosecutor Gary Gabry said. “And by her accepting responsibility to the domestic, we understand and that is why we made a referral or the recommendation for the deferral program.”…
