This Day in History: Aug. 19, 1927: The Gloria Theater opens in downtown Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The largest theater of its kind opened its doors on Charleston’s famous King Street in the summer of 1927.

The Gloria Theater was designed by C.K. Howell and opened on Aug. 19, 1927, with nearly 2,000 seats.

It was the third theater that the Pastime Amusement Company opened in Charleston. It would be followed by 11 more between 1925 and 1931.

The Gloria, at 331 King St., is the only theater of those opened during that time that still operates as a performing arts space today…
