They taught a nonverbal child to speak. Now these teachers could lose their jobs

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The future of hundreds of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools employees is on the line this week.

On Tuesday night, the school board will meet to consider laying off up to 350 positions—about five percent of the district’s workforce—to help close a $46 million budget shortfall.

Ahead of the vote, the Forsyth County Association of Educators is urging parents to write to board members to oppose the cuts. So far, more than 8,500 letters have been sent, and many families are also reaching out on their own. One of those parents is Amanda Yokeley. She remembers how her child’s teacher dressed up like a superhero when students returned to school after COVID closures. “To me, he was exactly that. He was our superhero,” she said…
