Woodland Heights is celebrating a major win in its ongoing Neat Neighborhoods projects: the transformation of the flower beds at the corner of Chase Street and Grant Avenue, right next to the Rook’s Auto Service parking lot.
What started last year as newly built beds around a new crosswalk, quickly turned into a challenge. Drivers cut through the space, weeds took over, trash piled up, and even the large rocks meant to block vehicles weren’t enough. Both neighbors and nearby businesses weren’t happy with how things were looking.
Neighborhood resident Karen Scranton connected with the City to address the issue. Together, they developed a plan: clear out the beds, bring in soil to raise them and match the look of Commercial Street’s landscaping. By late May, the work was underway. The City provided native plants, created berms instead of flat beds, and suddenly, the corner began to look more like a proper gateway to the neighborhood…
