PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — If Salem leaders fail to secure a letter of intent from a new commercial airline within the next several months, the Transportation Security Administration could remove its screening equipment from the city’s small airport.
Salem City Council discussed the future of air service during a work session on Monday evening, more than a week after Avelo Airlines officially ended commercial service within Oregon’s capital.

The meeting agenda shows the low-cost airline launched 820 flights that served around 90,000 travelers to and from Las Vegas, Burbank, Calif., and Santa Rose, Calif. since it began operations at the Salem-Willamette Valley Airport in October 2023. The service also generated an estimated $32.5 million in new visitor spending in its first 19 months, according to the city.
