A Mom’s Dilemma: Teen Jobs—Yay or Nay?
As a teen, I worked various part-time jobs. I learned responsibility, money management, and how to navigate the working world.
So, you’d think I’d be thrilled my two 15-year-old sons are eager to start working. Surprisingly, I’m not.
This summer, they were keen on summer jobs. I managed to deflect, citing family travel, sports camps, and the difficulty of finding businesses willing to hire 15-year-olds.
These reasons were legitimate, but honestly, I just wanted them to enjoy a carefree summer. Summer should be a time for rest, boredom, playing outside, and recharging before the school year.
Now that school’s approaching, the after-school job discussion is back. They’re asking about jobs almost daily.
My main argument? School is their job.
We expect good grades, and they’re student athletes. A job could spread them too thin.
Selfishly, I also don’t want to chauffeur them to work. I already spend too much time in my car.
Plus, I want them around! The school year is busy, and I barely see them.
Recently, they saw a “Help Wanted” sign and asked to apply. I agreed, watched them approach the counter, and saw the excitement as they returned with applications. But after reviewing the applications together, we decided to postpone applying until after the fall sports season.
I remember when jobs and college seemed so far off. Now, “someday” is here.
I’m proud of the young men they’re becoming. I’m not trying to stop time, but slowing it down a little wouldn’t be so bad.
