Shipments of bushmeat intercepted at Detroit airport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection specialists intercepted two separate shipments of bushmeat last month at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

CBP defines bushmeat as meat from wild animals that can pose a significant communicable disease risk, most often bats, cane rats and nonhuman primates. It is illegal to import into the United States.

Bushmeat is considered a delicacy in some parts of the world and is often consumed raw or after being smoked, dried or salted, “procedures that are not sufficient to render the meat noninfectious,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
