John Pick Jr. continues service at American Legion with unwavering dedication

John Pick Jr. , a former Marine from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, dedicated 17 years to the Marine Corps, serving as a motor transport specialist. His career took him to various locations, including Iraq and a seven-month Mediterranean cruise on the USS Kearsarge.

“We were actually in the Mediterranean when September 11th happened, so we were kind of on a stand still and standby to see what was going to happen and go from there. Luckily, we came home,” Pick said.

During his service, Pick experienced a life-changing incident. “I was with artillery battery and I drove my truck out to where we were setting up our artillery pieces,” he said. “I got up on top of the truck, rolled the netting down, the front, the back, the sides, I got on the driver’s side fender, jumped off the truck and when I hit the ground I felt a bunch of pressure. What had happened is my wedding band had caught a bolt on top of the mirror and it degloved the finger.”…
