County council allocates $37,500 in taxpayer funds for pork barrel spending

Horry County allocated $37,500 of taxpayers’ dollars toward local nonprofits and community initiatives across the county during its meeting on Aug. 19.

The expenditures are part of an annual $240,000 allocation set aside in the county’s general fund budget that allots each of the 12 council members $20,000 to support public projects, through council district community benefits accounts, within their districts.

All spending must serve a public purpose and go to other government agencies or organizations with verified tax-exempt status, like a 501(c)(3)…
