An intersection in East Austin was the scene of a fatal crash on August 12, when two cars collided at the junction of E SH 71 SVRD WB and S FM 973 Road, the Austin Police Department reports. One of the drivers, later identified as Lynda R. Pierson, was taken to the hospital following the incident and passed away four days later on August 16. The other driver stayed at the scene, cooperating with the authorities in the ongoing investigation of what is now Austin’s 64th fatal crash of the year.
Responding to the crash at approximately 3:09 p.m., first responders found the intersection marked by the signs of the sudden and violent meeting of unintended consequences. Mrs. Pierson, who was behind the wheel of one of the vehicles, succumbed to her injuries over subsequent days, as specified in a statement from the Austin Police Department. Compared to the previous year, Austin’s roads have seen a surge in fatalities, with this crash marking an increase from 55 fatal crashes resulting in 59 deaths by the same date in 2024.
