Tulsa Public Schools first day of class, addressing chronic absenteeism

TULSA, OKLA. (KTUL) — Many students across Green Country are heading back to school today, including those in Tulsa Public Schools (TPS). But this year, there’s a major focus on something beyond just the classroom… and that’s attendance.

TPS has had an attendance policy in place for some time, but this year, they’re enforcing it with new rules they say are critical to student success. The district is ramping up efforts to combat chronic absenteeism through their “attend to win” initiative, and they’re urging parents to take it seriously.

Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson said, “We currently have about 44% of our students who are considered chronically absent, which means they miss over 10% of the school year. We know that our families love their children, want the best for them, and we want the same, so we are going to partner even more. What that means, we are explaining to families that in the event that students have missed more than 10%, 16 days or more, we’re going to have conversations with our families.”…
