Apartments were planned to replace Boise’s aquarium. Now ‘big-city aquarium vibes’ proposed instead

In the early part of this decade, the City of Boise saw a flurry of applications to build new apartment projects in, around, and even right next to Boise Towne Square Mall. But none of the projects sprang to life, and now at least one is off the table.

BoiseDev first told you about a plan to add a six-story apartment project at Franklin Rd. and Cole Rd., on the site of the current Aquarium of Boise next to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in 2022. In 2023, developers reworked the project and ultimately won approval to build the Hummingbird with 170 apartments. But that two-year approval expired this spring.

Now, a new aquarium will be built next to the existing one in the 1970s building…
