Jury clears woman of charges in deadly shooting in NE Portland Safeway parking lot

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman was cleared of criminal charges in connection with a deadly shooting that happened in a Safeway parking lot in Northeast Portland last month.

The shooting happened on July 18 in the parking lot of a Safeway near Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Northeast 69th Avenue. A man was shot to death, identified as 42-year-old Jasen E. Fitzsimmons, Portland police said.

The man found dead by police was located outside a car. Inside the vehicle was an individual who was arrested and charged with murder and other crimes, though those charges have now been dismissed.

Ashe I. Sarehti had called 911 moments after she said someone attempted to steal the vehicle, entering the driver’s seat, while she was in the back seat. According to a probable cause affidavit, Sarethi said she shot the man, then unloaded the gun, remained in the vehicle and called 911…
