Former court clerk and longtime Charlotte volleyball coach facing child exploitation charges

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man who served both as a Mecklenburg County court clerk and a longtime youth volleyball coach is now facing serious charges in a child exploitation case under investigation by local and federal authorities.

Kent Dale Matzinger, 42, has been charged with two counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Court documents reveal the charges are the result of a multi-state investigation that began in Texas and led authorities to Charlotte.

Matzinger worked with the Clerk of Superior Court until August 2025. He also spent 16 years as a part-time volleyball coach with the Carolina Juniors Volleyball Club.

According to investigators, Matzinger is accused of exchanging money and gifts in return for explicit content he believed was being sent by a teenage girl online.
