Columbus Educator’s Family Still Seeking Answers Two Years After Unsolved Murder

COLUMBUS, Ga. – It has been more than two years since the tragic shooting of Dr. James McTyre Jr., a beloved Columbus educator and counselor. Yet for his family and friends, the pain remains as raw as the unanswered questions surrounding his murder.

Beloved Educator Gunned Down After Morning Walk

On the morning of February 26, 2023, McTyre stopped at a Circle K gas station on Wynnton Road after completing his usual walk at Lakebottom Park. Moments later, the 62-year-old was fatally shot multiple times while still in his vehicle. The car then veered off the road, crashing into bushes along Britt Avenue.

McTyre’s murder shocked the Columbus community, particularly those who knew him through his lifelong work in education and family services. He had served as a professor, a school counselor, and a dedicated member of the Department of Family and Children Services.

A Life Dedicated to Helping Others

Family members describe McTyre as a kind and prayerful man who found purpose in helping others — especially children and struggling families. His sister, Toni, who has been one of the most vocal advocates for justice, reflected on the emotional toll the loss has taken on her.
