Person, dog rescued from 30 foot Catamaran on the James River

SUFFOLK, Va. ( WAVY) — A person and a dog were rescued off of a boat on the James River Thursday morning,

According to officials, crews responded to Interstate 664 at College Drive at 9:28 a.m. for a reported boat in distress. Crews arrived at the Tidewater Community College Workforce Development and located a 30 foot Catalac Catamaran that was drifting towards the Suffolk shore line west of Interstate 664 in the James River.

Officials made contact with the vessel’s operator and learned one adult and a dog were on board. Fire crews from Suffolk and Newport News responded and were able to safely remove the adult and the dog. They were taken to the dock at Decoy’s.

Due to the wind and waves in the James River, the catamaran’s anchor was unable to prevent the vessel from drifting towards the shoreline and efforts made by the Suffolk and Newport News Fire Boats to prevent the boat from continuing to move towards the shore were unsuccessful. Due to the weather conditions, the boat will continue to drift towards Suffolk’s shoreline…
