BIRMIGNHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department started an active death investigation after a 6-year-old boy was found dead Tuesday morning.
According to the BPD, officers were dispatched around 11:30 a.m. to the 700 block of 24th Avenue Northwest on a report of a person shot. At the scene, they found the 6-year-old boy inside of a bedroom unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived and pronounced the child dead.

A preliminary investigation revealed the child was inside the apartment with two adults when he went into a bedroom and found an unsecured firearm. The boy then discharged the gun, fatally wounding himself.
