Teachers must use sick time if absent on anniversary of Apalachee High shooting

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – As the one-year anniversary of the Sep. 4 tragedy at Apalachee High School approaches — which claimed the lives of four people — emotions remain mixed among those who walk its halls.

WRDW’s sister station, Atlanta News First, spoke with a teacher who requested anonymity. He said he had been just three classrooms away when police detained the shooter.

“It’s mixed. You know, part of me wants to be there for the kids, and then other days I feel like I’ll wake up and I don’t want to get out of bed that day,” the teacher said.

In a letter sent to Apalachee High School families outlining the plans for the remembrance day — called “A Day of Prevailing Love” — students are given the option to take an excused absence. This absence will not affect their final exam exemption eligibility…
