Ron Faucheux: Where the New Orleans mayor’s race now stands

The open primary for mayor of New Orleans is seven weeks away. Early voting starts in five weeks. A lot will happen between now and then. Where does the race now stand?

The recent WWL-TV poll that I conducted shows Helena Moreno, an at-large member of the City Council, in first place with 47% of the vote. She is followed by state Sen. Royce Duplessis with 18% and District E Council member Oliver Thomas with 16%. Other candidates total 5%, and 14% of voters are undecided.

The big question among local politicos is whether frontrunner Moreno can win without a runoff. It may be possible, but it’s still too early to tell…
