BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Faith leaders and community members in Birmingham have voiced strong opposition to a new legislative proposal they believe threatens local governance. The bill, known as House Bill 36, was filed on August 14, 2025, and would permit the Governor and Attorney General of Alabama to appoint an interim city police chief if they determine there is an ongoing threat to public safety.
Pastor Guy Harris of the Tabernacle of Faith Christian Church expressed concern over the bill’s potential impact, stating, “We understand now that it has bipartisan support, and with that being said, it very well can become law.” Harris added, “That’s a problem.
