Family Treasure Funds Adoption Dream

A heartwarming story of family, legacy, and a very special jug recently unfolded on PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow.” The story began years ago when guest Tom brought a seemingly ordinary stoneware jug, a cherished family heirloom, to be appraised.

Appraiser Allan Katz initially estimated its worth at a modest $350-$400. However, upon learning the jug’s sentimental value to Tom, Katz took a closer look and discovered its unique design.

He then declared it a “monumental piece of American stoneware,” revising his appraisal to between $65,000 and $85,000.

Tom, who was hoping to adopt a baby boy from Guatemala, asked Katz to help sell the jug. Katz facilitated a sale for an impressive $110,000.

The funds allowed Tom and his wife, Carol, to adopt Henry and bring him home to join their daughter, Rachel. Tragically, Tom passed away four years later.

In a touching reunion orchestrated by “Antiques Roadshow,” a now-grown Henry was brought face-to-face with the jug that made his adoption possible. The jug’s current owner graciously loaned it to the show for this special moment.

A visibly moved Henry exclaimed, “Whoa! That’s the jug?”

Carol shared how the sale not only funded the adoption but also allowed their family to travel to Guatemala together and even purchase a second car, affectionately nicknamed the “Jug Bug.”

Henry, a recent high school graduate about to embark on a college program in audio engineering, expressed his gratitude for the opportunities afforded him. Carol added that Tom would have been immensely proud of Henry’s accomplishments and connection to his roots. The reunion resonated deeply with viewers, who praised the show for its heartwarming portrayal of this unique adoption story.
