Throwback Thursday: Damon Bradshaw as a Rising Amateur (1987)

The Beast from the East Racing in His Home State of North Carolina

In this week’s Throwback, we wind back the clock to February of 1987 and see a rapidly rising amateur rider out of North Carolina named Damon Bradshaw.

At this point Bradshaw was just 14 years old, but already he was making a serious impression on anyone who saw him race. In fact, ask those who watched him race in the years before turning pro and many will tell you he was the best amateur racer they’d ever seen. In the photo Bradshaw (68) is leading the 125cc Amateur class at the Montrose Motocross track in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Among those giving chase are Bobby Houser (34) and Kevin Walker (97). Bradshaw went on to win the moto and the overall. The next summer Bradshaw turned pro and made his debut at Millville, where he finished a solid fourth overall. He would go on to win 29 combined AMA Motocross and Supercross events during his career…
