Virginia State Police investigating inmate death at Alleghany Regional Jail

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police is investigating the death of an incarcerated individual at the Alleghany Regional Jail.

Authorities have confirmed the death of Kevin Lee Joyce, who went unresponsive while talking to deputies and medical staff on Thursday at about 4:48 a.m. Alleghany County deputies report that life-saving measures were immediately started and emergency medical services were notified; however, Joyce was later pronounced deceased at 5:30 a.m.

Joyce, a former Roanoke City School teacher, was being held without bond and was awaiting sentencing on five counts of using a computer to propose sex to a minor under the age of 15. As we’ve previously reported, he was arrested following an online undercover chat operation that the Investigations Division of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office conducted in September 2024. Joyce was under the impression that he was speaking to a girl under 15 years old and expressed his intentions to travel to Alleghany County to meet with the girl for a sexual encounter, authorities said.
