Geddes, N.Y. — Gate 1 at the New York State Fair never seemed so lonely.
For decades, folks would try to outdo each other to secure the pole position at the security station. They’d arrive as early as 3 a.m. They’d watch the sunrise, enjoy their coffee and tell stories of past state fairs.
At 5:30 a.m. today, there was no crowd at the locked gate. Then again, the temperature was 55 degrees, and the rain was becoming heavier…
