New type of ad causing fires at Linn County landfill

LINN COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – A number of fires at the Linn County landfill over the past week are being linked to a simple piece of advertising.

It looks like a folder or small book, they’re called video brochures. You open them up and the brochure plays a short promotional video. The problem is, those brochures contain lithium batteries, which when crushed can start fires.

“All the sudden you might have a truck that’s on it’s way out to the recycling center or the landfill and there’s a fire in the back of there,” said Joe Horaney, Linn County Solid Waste Agency deputy director…
