Everglades wildfire doubles in size, now at 42,000 acres

NAPLES, Fla. (WFLA) — Firefighters are working to contain a massive wildfire burning in the Everglades, which has now doubled in size from just a day ago and spans at least 42,000 acres.

According to NBC affiliate WTVJ, the blaze is known as the Mile Marker 39 Fire and is currently only about 10% contained. The reason for this is attributed to its location along the wetlands, which makes access extremely difficult.

Reporters say that in some areas, responders are even having to rely on helicopters to scoop water from canals located nearby and drop them over the flames…
